A Public-Private Partnership (P3) between the Government of Saskatchewan and the Access Prairies Design Build Consortium, the South Hospital North Battleford (SHNB) replaces the grouping of existing hospital buildings which was founded in 1913; Saskatchewan’s first hospital to serve those with mental conditions. Today it functions as the province’s only psychiatric rehabilitation hospital, with clients staying anywhere from 48 hours for assessment, to many years as live-in residents.
The site design includes eight wing-related courtyards (760m2 each) with areas for passive sitting and walking, active recreation including half basketball courts, raised planters for resident gardening, group gathering and private spaces, picnic and barbeque areas, healing gardens and residential scaled plantings for the residents’ enjoyment. There are two large shared courtyards (2450m2 each) containing full basketball courts, volleyball, horseshoe pits, fire pits, barbeque areas, circular pathways, picnicking and gardening opportunities. One of the large shared courtyards contains a central sweat lodge.
The overall site has three separate parking lots for the different wings and for public use, looping walking pathways with rest areas every 50 meters with tactile strips at all pathway intersections and handrails for residents with mobility issues. There is an interpretive ‘welcome wall’ at the main entrance to the facility to help provide an informative and inviting experience for people coming to the hospital. There is a skating rink for residents use in the winter that will be used for large gathering areas and public events during the summer months.
