In 2012, an Open Space Master Plan was completed which included a concept plan for the redevelopment of the current Millennium Park into a larger Riverfront Park, enhancing existing park infrastructure and offering additional recreational opportunities for this growing community.  With strong rural heritage, small town character and set in a valley with prominent vistas, it was evident the goals of the proposed Riverfront Park would be to enhance the sense of place and foster experiences and recreational opportunities reflecting the natural landscape.

Following an assessment of the existing pathway infrastructure, a hierarchy of proposed and existing pathways was established with respect to creating an accessible path network throughout Riverfront Park. By creating meaningful connections, and promoting exploration, pedestrians are encouraged to interact with the natural environment. Located on the Bow River, and encompassing multiple creek and drainage outlets, the site offers a bounty of opportunities for interaction with the natural hydrology. These opportunities come with a necessity and responsibility to be protected, restored and enhanced.

The design of the park was revisited following the 2013 floods as much of the shoreline, banks and existing crossings were affected. ground cubed conducted a post-flood assessment and worked closely with team consultants and the Town of Cochrane to update the plan with respect to future hydrological events.
