As a significant park anchoring Downtown Calgary’s West End, opportunities to provide added functionality and general improvements were a focus of the restoration efforts. Primary objectives included restoring impacted historical components, improving park access, improving lighting through CPTED principles and providing for additional event and sport space.
With the adjacent Shaw Millennium Skatepark and new LRT guideway imposing a hefty architectural statement, combined with historically significant architecture in the Mewata Armoury and the former Science Centre, the restored park needed to respect the adjacent context while uncovering new opportunities for enhancements and improvements.
Design elements include ‘memory’ walls and panels – recalling and paying tribute to historical aspects of the park that were impacted. A new entry plaza off of 11th Street SW in recognition of the previous main entrance to the former Science Centre provides the principle organizing element on the east end of the Park. Pathway improvements ease maintenance burdens, improving legibility and providing greater durability of surfaces.
