Seton Recreation Facility is an 8.3 hectare joint use site on the southeast edge of Calgary. With recreational, leisure, sports, arts and cultural amenities the facility will meet the recreation and wellness needs of individuals and families, as well as competitive sport venues for groups and organizations. The master plan of the site is organized as a multi-use, multi-generation community campus with a future high school, adjacent LRT access and outdoor sports fields.
The overall design concept sets the stage for smart growth in the future by incorporating multi-use spaces in addition to traditional sports fields.
We understand the importance of developing spaces within spaces. The creation of “sparking lots” is a flexible programming element where a parking lot functions as courts for team sports such as ball hockey or basketball.
Working closely with the project architect, Gibbs Gage Architects, the building and immediate outdoor space are designed to function inclusively. Starting with a blank slate in a newly developed and fast growing community, the site has unlocked potential. The considerations of form for the site are guided through a bold and substantial idea. The team developed the theme - a cultural mosaic of Southern Alberta, drawing inspiration from the land and patterns of development. This then guided the design of the three main entry plazas and supporting landscape space. Currently breaking ground in construction, the facility is estimated to open in 2018.
