Currently under construction, this park envisions the redevelopment of a much needed public green space for the Beltline community and neighbouring residents. Located adjacent Calgary’s bustling 17 Avenue SW, the Beltline community is becoming increasingly dense and multicultural.
With the current lack of green space in the Beltline, the park redevelopment provides residents with a place that is open and accessible to all. Previously, half of the park site contained a special heritage element - The Calgary Lawn Bowling Club. With the club moving to a new facility, the City of Calgary recognized the opportunity to redevelop the entire space as one large park that is not about any exclusive use, but rather the supporting program required for a great public space.
The redevelopment will reflect the vision and desires of the community and donor family, honour the site’s history and serve to connect park users with each other. This renewed park will provide a substantial addition to the green space in the Beltline - which now only meets 30 percent of the City of Calgary’s community open space targets.
Thomson Family Park includes creative formal and public event spaces. The public has already identified a venue for movies in the park and informal settings for public gatherings and casual events. Other design components include open green space, places for active and passive recreation and general enjoyment.
