Crescent Road NW Master Plan

Client | City of Calgary

Status | Completed 2022

Project Type | Master Plan

The master plan was developed with the goal of mitigating documented issues relative to speeding, stunting, pedestrian safety, accessibility, year round use, and flexibility. With a wide right-of-way and sub-standard pedestrian surfaces and space allocation, the master plan prioritized walking and wheeling facilities while reducing lane widths and opportunities for speeding.

Design considerations referenced precedent City projects and included elements such as tabled intersections, chicanes, and curb extensions (for traffic calming), and the addition of wheeling lanes and pedestrian facilities to create a more comfortable and safe environment for a variety of user groups.

A principle objective was moving away from the conventional linear assignment of municipal infrastructure components in favor of a more dynamic assignment. The goal being for the deployment of putting public space and amenity where it needed to be - for future programming, for improving the quality (and area) of existing spaces, fostering new opportunities, and breaking the tradition of linear design.

Crescent Road NW was awarded the TAC Mobility Achievement Award in 2023.
